Spring 2008 Adventure Classroom for Home Schoolers (Grades
7-12)
This spring, WILD GUYde Adventures is offering home-schooled junior and senior high students the opportunity to
combine nature exploration with adventure. Specifically, the activities of hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, and
caving will be contexts
for instruction in and forest flora, geological formation, and underground
features. Adventure
Classroom will be exciting fun and learning with friends under trained leadership, and in the marvelous “natural
classroom.”
Who? Home schooled students in grades 7-9 or
10-12. Participants do not need to be
“super athletes,” but they should be comfortable with extended vigorous
activity. Two adult leaders will
accompany each outing.
Format: Four full-day adventure trips: hiking in the
National Forest*, rock climbing at Waterfall Mountain, paddling at Switzer Dam,
and caving at Glade Cave. The adventure
days will provide beginner instruction in the skill fundamentals of each
activity, as well as some guidance about the environmental science topic of the
day. Students will also be introduced to
Leave No Trace principles of natural resource usage, and encouraged to
think through some of the current challenges to environmental preservation.
Logistics: WILD GUYde can provide some
transportation, but an additional parent driver may be occasionally
necessary. All sites are within 60
minutes of
What
to bring: WILD GUYde Adventures will provide all group and
specialized activity equipment (helmets, harnesses, ropes, etc.). A personal equipment-to-bring list for
participants will be provided.
When? Selected weekdays in May and early June 2008:
Thurs., 5/22 – Hiking; Thurs., 6/12 –
Caving; Thurs., 6/5 – Rock Climbing; and Wed. 6/18 – Paddling. Overflow
dates will be announced in April.
How
much? $30 for first trip, $55 for two trips, $75
for three, and $95 for all four.
Is
it safe? The outdoors is not a safe place. Part of what adventure means is that
not all risks are eliminated. By
teaching proper skills and precautions, and using the right equipment, we
attempt to manage risk.
Participants will be asked to complete a Medical Form, and sign a
Participant Agreement acknowledging various dangers.
Memorabilia: Students will receive a certificate of
participation from WILD GUYde for 1 trip, a trail card
for 2, and a Leave No Trace patch for 3.
Students are also encouraged to bring a camera to save memories.
Sign-up: Students may
register for 1, 2, 3 or all 4 adventures. Day trips are limited to 10 students each;
priority registration will be given early commitments, and to students
registering for multiple dates. Download
